Arrival

The Schauinsland is located 15km south of Freiburg, 50km north of Switzerland (Basel) and 50km east of France (Colmar) and is easily reachable thanks to an extensive road network. At its summit there is a 31m high observation tower and at 1.284m it is one of the highest mountains in the Black Forest. In clear weather, the Schauinsland offers a fantastic view all the way to the Swiss Alps, thus being true to its name.

The Downinsland scooter track begins at the top of the Schauinsland mountain at the cable car station at an altitude of 1.220m and ends at the valley station 8km away, running over well prepared forest tracks and ending at the bottom station in the valley, at 473m. The best way to reach the beginning of the scooter track is to take the Schauinsland cable car, which is also used to return scooters back to the start.

Usual practice is to take the cable car to the top of the Schauinsland and then go down by scooter.
It is however possible to do things the other way round: go down by scooter and then back up by taking the cable car. This is a sensible option if you come to the Schauinsland from the south (Todtnau). Be aware that this will usually not work with the 5pm scooter ride due to time constraints.

The journey to us by Schauinsland cable car is an experience in itself: with its length of 3.6km, the Schauinsland cable car is the longest continuous cable car route in Germany. It has been in operation since 1930, linking Freiburg to the mountain top in 20 minutes. The gondolas can carry up to seven people, travel at speeds of around 3.5m/s (13 km/h) and depart up to every two minutes.
From Freiburg-Centre it takes about 60 minutes by tram, bus and cable car to the top of the Schauinsland. Please allow extra time for delays.

Public Transport: ÖPNV

The Schauinsland mountain can be reached from Freiburg using comfortable and environmentally friendly public transport. There are two ways to reach us:
Simply catch the VAG tram line 2 + bus 21, followed by the Schauinsland cable car (running continuously, every day from 9am till 5pm, July – September until 6pm).

If coming from the Dreisamtal (valley of Dreisam), take the SBG bus line 7215 from Kirchzarten train station to the stop “Halde” in 30 minutes. It will take you another 30 minutes on foot to reach the scooter issuing point at the top cable car station.

Saturdays/ Sundays and Bank Holidays from the middle of May until the end of September, the SBG bus line will also stop at the Schauinsland mountain cable car station at almost hourly intervals. Starting from central station Freiburg (Freiburg-Kirchzarten by train), you will reach the scooter issuing point in 50 minutes.

When coming from the Wiesental via Todtnau, the closest bus stop of SBG bus line 7215 is Schauinsland Halde. The Schauinsland mountain cable car station is a 30 minute walk away.

By Coach

Watch it ! Please be aware of the 3.6m height limit on the archway in Freiburg-Günterstal along the stretch from Freiburg centre to the valley station in Horben.
A good alternative (and less curvy!) is to drive via Freiburg, Kirchzarten L126, Oberried direction Todtnau, turn off in Hofsgrund towards Schauinsland (signposting “Schauinslandbahn” and “Museums-Bergwerk”).
Both routes will take you around 30 minutes. You’ll find parking spaces for busses below the mountain cable car station as well as at the valley station.
